Can HubSpot show historical pipeline data?
Mostly no. HubSpot keeps a change history on individual deal properties, so you can see when one deal moved stages. What it does not give you, in any straightforward way, is a picture of your entire pipeline as it stood on a chosen past date: total open value, deal count by stage, and what has changed since. To get that, something has to record the whole pipeline on a schedule and keep those records.
What HubSpot does keep
It's worth being precise here, because "HubSpot can't do history" is an overstatement that gets repeated a lot.
HubSpot does keep property history on individual records. Open any deal, look at the property history, and you can see that it moved from Discovery to Demo on a particular date, or that the amount changed from $40,000 to $55,000. That data exists and it's reliable.
Depending on your subscription tier, you may also have access to deal progression and stage-change reporting, which can tell you how many deals moved between stages over a period. Higher Sales Hub tiers include forecasting tools that carry some historical context.
So the raw material is partly there. The problem is the shape of it.
What it doesn't give you
The question a sales leader actually asks is not "when did this one deal move?" It's some version of:
- What did our open pipeline total on the first of last month?
- How much has entered the pipeline since then, and how much has left?
- Is this quarter tracking ahead of or behind the same point last quarter?
- Which deals were forecast to close this month back when we set the number, and where are they now?
Each of those requires a point-in-time snapshot of every open deal at once, and then a second snapshot to compare it against. Reconstructing that from per-deal property history means replaying every change across every deal to rebuild the state of the pipeline on a given day. It's theoretically possible through the API. In practice it's an engineering project, not a report you can build on a Tuesday afternoon.
This is the actual gap: not missing data, but data in a form that can't answer time-based questions without work.
Option one: snapshot it yourself
The manual version works, and plenty of teams run it for years. Each week, on a fixed day:
- Export all open deals from HubSpot with stage, amount, close date, owner, and deal ID.
- Paste it into a new dated tab in a spreadsheet, never overwrite the last one.
- Compare this week's tab to last week's by deal ID to see what entered, moved, or disappeared.
The failure mode is worth naming. This depends on a person remembering, every single week, forever. Miss one week and that gap can never be filled, because the data it would have captured is already overwritten. Most teams who try this end up with a few clean months followed by holes around quarter-ends and holidays, which is exactly when the data mattered most.
If you're a small team and you want to start today at zero cost, do this. Just automate the reminder, and put the file somewhere that isn't one person's laptop.
Option two: capture it automatically
The durable fix is a scheduled job that reads your open deals through the HubSpot API on a fixed cadence and writes them to storage HubSpot doesn't control. Once you have two or more of those records, the comparisons become trivial.
That's what Pipelapse does: a weekly record of every open deal, kept automatically, with the differences worked out for you. But you don't need us specifically. If you have a developer, a scheduled script writing to a database or even a dated CSV in cloud storage gets you the same thing. The important part is that something other than a person's memory is doing the remembering.
Start now, whichever way you choose
The one thing you can't fix later is a late start. History cannot be backfilled. If you begin capturing snapshots in March, your first useful quarter-over-quarter comparison arrives the following year. A rough weekly export that starts this Friday beats a perfect system that starts in six months.
Common questions
Does HubSpot store deal stage history?
Yes. HubSpot retains property history on individual deal records, so you can see when a specific deal changed stage, amount, or close date. What it doesn't readily provide is a view of your whole pipeline as it stood on a past date.
Can I rebuild past pipeline states from HubSpot's API?
In principle yes, by replaying every property change across every deal to reconstruct the pipeline on a given date. In practice this is a development project rather than a reporting task, and it's usually cheaper to start capturing snapshots going forward than to reconstruct the past.
Can pipeline history be backfilled?
No. Once HubSpot overwrites a deal's values, the previous aggregate state is gone unless something recorded it at the time. This is why it's worth starting to capture snapshots immediately, even with a rough manual process.
